CIVIC TV
GIVE ME SHELTER (AURORA)
FEBRUARY 2019
Civic TV Laboratories is pleased to co-present the second installment of our Give Me Shelter exhibition series; co-presented and hosted by Aurora Picture. Give Me Shelter (Aurora) includes work by Houston artists Shannon Crider, London Ham, and David Janesko, and Dallas artists Alison Starr and William Sarradet, in an exhibition that explores the recontextualizing of moving image media by offering entry points through sculpture, performance, installation, and print. Curated by Terry Suprean and Luke Harnden, the exhibition follows the series’ mission to catalyze new methodologies for organizing encounters between artists and artist-run spaces across the state of Texas.
A collaborative artist publication will be available at the exhibition; published by Civic TV Laboratories & the Free International University-Texas.
About The "Give Me Shelter" Exhibition Series:
Co-developed by artist collectives Civic TV Laboratories (Houston) and Beefhaus (Dallas), the Give Me Shelter exhibition series was conceived to catalyze new methodologies for organizing encounters between artists and artist-run spaces across the state of Texas. In the Spring of 2018, both Civic TV and Beefhaus learned they would soon lose their gallery spaces due to real estate development, rising rent prices, and gentrification; an unfortunate nationwide trend putting the grassroots tradition of artist-run spaces under threat. The Give Me Shelter exhibition series was established in the midst of this environment as a progressive methodology for addressing these issues through cross-pollination, collaboration, and cohabitation; a banding together between artists and the organizations they run as modus for future sustainability. In this process, each exhibition in the series calls on the artists of one Texas city to offer shelter to those of another. A gesture of invitation and cohabitation furthered by Civic TV’s current nomadic model of operation that relies upon donated space for its curatorial efforts.
